Bulgaria has launched a new 20-kilometer section of the gas pipeline to Turkey, to ensure the transit of Russian gas through the TurkStream’s second line.

Thus, the bypass section will increase the capacity of the gas pipeline up to 15.7 billion m³ of gas per year. An expert of the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies’, Jonathan Stern, claims that Greece and Bulgaria are two alternative destinations for Russian gas to Europe.

«If Gazprom believes that the ultimate market for TurkStream 2’s gas is Italy – then Greece is a better option. If Gazprom believes that the ultimate market for TurkStream 2’s gas is Central Europe – then Bulgaria is a better option,» – the expert said.

According to Stern, an agreement has not yet been reached with the European Union on the TurkStream’s second line, Anadolu news agency reports.

«The steps Bulgaria will make on this issue will depend on the agreement that will be reached with the EU, as well as on the schedule of gas transportation within the European Union. Sofia can express its readiness to transit the entire volume of Russian gas supplied via the Turkish flow,» – Mr Stern believes.
