At a depth of more than 600 kilometers, on the border between the upper and lower mantle, scientists of Princeton University and the Chinese Institute of Geology and Geophysics have discovered mountains.

According to a press release on Phys.org, researchers analyzed seismological data obtained during a magnitude earthquake 8.2 in Bolivia in 1994, and modeled features of scattering of waves passing through rocks and reflected or refracted due to presence of transitions between rocks of different density or topographic features.

ccording to geologists, although the statistical model does not allow determining the height of irregularities, preliminary estimates show that they are probably more than any relief details on the surface of the earth’s crust.
