The head of the State Customs Service of Ukraine Maksym Nefedov in interview with NV Radio has said that last year the agency lost 85% of cases against smugglers.
“In 2019, customs lost 85% of the cases in court against smugglers who underestimated the cost of imported goods. To legislation, there is anything illegal in their actions: they say they were lucky to purchase an iPhone for USD 10, so why does the customs claims it should cost as much as Apple indicated on website? Then they go to court, and sometimes our most honest Themis in the world rules: they act under one-page contract, and yes, you need to return money to these successful businessmen,” Nefedov noted.
The head of the customs service also added that there is a very significant increase in the volume of imports of consumer goods, which indicates a decrease in smuggling.
“Since it’s hard for me to believe that Ukrainians began to buy more than one phone, this means that part of the ‘gray’ phones is now declared, but our struggle does not end,” Nefedov stressed.
