The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine has published on its electronic auction website SETAM bids to sell pet dogs to collect debts from their owners, UNIAN reports.
According to the information published on SETAM website, at the May 22 auction offer a pitbull born in 2015 at a starting price of UAH 112.5. Also on May 25, an Eastern European Shepherd was put up for auction for UAH 1,300.
The first dog was confiscated from its owners as part of property arrest made in Donetsk region in October 2019, and the second dog was confiscated in March 2020 in Khmelnitsky region.
Another dog seized from its owner for debts in Izmail was sold at SETAM auction for UAH 500.
The shepherd was seized by a court decision two weeks before the auction. Four bidders wanted to buy the dog, but three of them did not pay the guarantee fee, so the fourth participant received the dog, having paid just UAH 500.
According to the head of the Ministry of Justice Denys Maliuska, pets can be confiscated for debts in Ukraine.
“Typically, we are talking about valuable pets. Owners usually redeem their pets for a penny (the price of lots is small) through relatives,” Maliuska said, adding that the Justice Ministry and People’s Deputies are considering options for a proper legislative settlement of such situations.
