On December 15, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba met with Hans Kluge, Director of the Regional Office for Europe of the World Health Organization. The Journalist reported with reference to the press center of the Foreign Ministry.
The key topics of the meeting were support for Ukraine in countering the coronavirus pandemic and access to effective, high-quality and safe vaccines.
“The updated two-year program on cooperation between the WHO Regional Office for Europe and Ukraine opens up new opportunities for attracting international support to overcome the coronavirus epidemic in our country. I highly appreciate that the bureau has identified the implementation of the program as one of its priorities and has already begun practical work. We strive to maximize the potential of WHO for the prevention, treatment and early coronavirus vaccination of the population,” said Dmytro Kuleba.
Hans Kluge assured that WHO is working closely with partners in Ukraine and abroad to effectively counter the coronavirus pandemic, overcome its socio-economic consequences and strengthen the Ukrainian healthcare system.
The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine separately drew the attention of the WHO representative to the difficult epidemic situation in the territories of Donbas and Crimea temporarily occupied by Russia:
“Russia as an occupying state continues to evade the fulfillment of its international obligations under the Geneva Convention IV on Protection of Civilians. Residents of the occupied parts of Donbas and Crimea are not provided with adequate medical and social protection, which is unacceptable against the backdrop of the ongoing pandemic.”
In this context, Dmytro Kuleba and Hans Kluge discussed the access of international organizations to the parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation.
