German scientists from the University of Duisburg-Essen have discovered a previously unknown network of small blood vessels within human bones. About this reports edition Science Alert.

The results of new research can help scientists explain how injections of drugs into the bone marrow promote the spread of drugs throughout the body. According to scientists, these channels, called transcortical vessels (English trans-cortical vessels), help blood and immune cells to quickly penetrate into various organs and parts of the body.
It became known that researchers used ethyl cinnamine, a chemical that decoloured bones and made them transparent, to identify vessels. Then the bone was examined using fluorescent light and X-ray microscopy. As a result, several hundred vessels were found passing through the bone substance. It is estimated that 80% of arterial and 59% of venous blood flow through them.
