On April 25, the New Safe Confinement at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant has successfully completed its final commissioning test; it will secure deconstruction of the old shelter and the destroyed reactor.

This was reported by the press service of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), which has provided over EUR 715 million of its own resources to support Chernobyl projects including the construction of the New Safe Confinement.

“The New Safe Confinement at Chernobyl NPP has successfully completed its final commissioning test,” it was reported.

It is noted that the successful conclusion of the 72-hour trial operation test, a day before the 33rd anniversary of the 1986 accident, marks the safe physical completion of the new structure placed over the destroyed 4th power unit of the Chernobyl NPP.

“This event is the culmination of more than a decade’s history of the New Safe Confinement construction, conducted with the assistance of the Chernobyl Shelter Fund established by the EBRD,” Telegraf reports.

As The Journalist reported, commemorative events dedicated to the 33rd anniversary of the Chernobyl tragedy to be held in Kyiv.
