Ilyich Iron and Steel works owned by Ukrainian entrepreneur Rinat Akhmetov was fined UAH 10 million for environmental offences. Iron and Steel works made overtime discharges into the water in the period from September 4, 2019 to February 4, 2020. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Protection of Ukraine.
“We insist on a complete reboot and reform of the department,” Minister of Energy Oleksiy Orzhel commented on the situation.
Now the government is developing a reform plan for the State Environmental Inspectorate, during which they intent to raise salaries to employees of the department. The government also plans to increase fines for not allowing environmental inspections at polluting enterprises.
