Eight Schengen countries to resume control at internal borders

Seven EU countries and Switzerland intend to resume border control at their external borders, which are simultaneously internal borders between European countries within the Schengen area. This was announced by the representative of the European Commission on Migration, Internal Affairs and Citizenship Adalbert Jahnz, Ukrinform reports.

According to legal procedures, control at (internal) borders can be introduced by EU states after notification to the European Commission and other member states.

“This is about the introduction of 10-days initial control period, which can be extended up to a maximum of 2 months. At this stage, we received a message (about such an intention) from 7 member countries – Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Denmark, Poland, Lithuania and Germany, as well as from Switzerland,” the representative of the European Commission explained.
