The British court granted political asylum to the former head of Ukrspetseksport, Serhiy Bondarchuk, said the Ukrainian Deputy Prosecutor General Yevgen Enin.
«The hero of Ukraine was afraid to appear before the Ukrainian justice for his corruption crimes … and asked for political asylum in Britain. It’s a pity that the British court granted him a refuge, despite the efforts of Ukrainian and British prosecutors. Fortunately, Bondarchuk’s case is an unfortunate exception rather than rule, as in the past couple of years the Prosecutor General’s Office has reached out more than one ex-official from abroad – the number of «safe places» on the world map will constantly be declining in the future!» – Enin stressed.
Note that Bondarchuk was the general director of Ukrspetsexport from 2005 to 2010. The Prosecutor General’s Office charges him with the seizure of Ukrspetseksport funds worth more than USD 7 million. The former chairman of Ukrspetsexport was internationally wanted by Interpol.
On March 15, 2017, according to the Prosecutor General’s Office, Bondarchuk was arrested in London as part of the extradition process, but on March 17 he was released from custody after paying GBR 75,000 bail.
As The Journalist reported, Belarus granted refugee status to ex-defense minister of Ukraine.
