The European Union has brought two disputes in the World Trade Organisation (WTO) against India and Turkey. The first disputes targeting unlawful import duties on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) products. The second one brought due to Turkish legislation on pharmaceuticals, assessing its total losses of more than EUR 1 billion per year. This is reported in the statement of the European Union.
It is noted that India has been applying duties ranging from 7.5% to 20%, despite its earlier legally binding commitment in the WTO not to charge any duties on instance mobile phones and components, base stations, integrated circuits and optical instruments.
In addition, the EU is unhappy with Turkey’s measures forcing foreign manufacturers of pharmaceutical products to move their production to the country if they want their medicines to be entitled to compensation for consumers within the Turkish health care system.
Also, the EU is not satisfied that Turkey applies a number of technology transfer requirements in cases where companies move production to Turkey.
Consultations will be held during 60 days. If the disputes would not be resolved after this period, the EU may require the WTO to create a group to decide on the raised issues.
