Peter Stano, Lead Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy at the European External Relations Service, has said the opening of railway traffic between Russia and the Crimea was another violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty.

“The Russian Federation has finalized the construction of the railway section of the Kerch Bridge and is opening railway links to the Crimean Peninsula without Ukraine’s permission. This is another violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity by Russia,” the EU statement said.

He noted that “the railway link is another step towards a forced integration of the illegally annexed peninsula with Russia and Crimea’s isolation from Ukraine of which it remains a part.”

Also, the bridge limits the passage of vessels through the Kerch Strait to Ukrainian ports in the Sea of Azov, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

“The European Union expects Russia to ensure unhindered and free passage through the Kerch Strait in accordance with international law,” the EU speaker said.

The European Union does not and will not recognize the illegal annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and Sevastopol by Russia.
