The German Presidency of the Council of the EU will hold a crisis meeting in Brussels in connection with the situation around a new type of coronavirus. The meeting will take place December 21. It is reported by DW.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron, Head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and President of the European Council Charles Michel held phone talks to coordinate efforts to counter the pandemic. It was decided to hold a meeting due to the detection of a mutation of the coronavirus, which, according to preliminary information, spreads 70% faster than with already known variants.

So far, there is no evidence that this mutation leads to more mortality or affects the effect of vaccines and treatment.
