Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine, Annika Vademann, has noted the urgent need in limiting functions of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

She announced this at a VI meeting of the Parliamentary-Public Platform, Ukrinform reports.

According to the Deputy Head, if the SBU wants to strengthen ties with western partners, it should increase the level of trust, both internationally and within Ukraine.

According to her, for economic prosperity of Ukraine and attracting new investors – not only foreign, but also Ukrainian – it is important for law enforcement agencies to be on the economic entities’ side, and not interfere with their activities.

It is noted that investors should feel that law enforcement agencies will never be used as enrichment tool for corrupt individuals.

“The lack of reforms in the SBU is an obstacle to the establishment of trust and Ukraine’s integration into Western structures. We believe that the functions of the Security Service, as provided for in the new law on national security, should be limited to counterintelligence, counterterrorism and the protection of state security. At the same time, the SBU should lose its authority in the field of economic and organized crime. These are not Security Service’s functions,” said Annika Vademann.

As The Journalist reported, new inter-factional deputy association “Business Varta” has been created in the parliament.
