In response to one of the most devastating floods in western Ukraine over the past 50 years, resulting in several deaths and hundreds of houses being damaged, four EU member states, namely Sweden, Italy, Denmark and Slovakia, provided Ukraine with urgent assistance to deal with the consequences of floods and to prevent further destruction, the EU Delegation to Ukraine reports.
Assistance transportation was coordinated and co-financed within the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
“Civil protection resources have been at their limit in recent months. However, the EU has kept its commitment to disaster relief. I am sincerely grateful to the four EU member states that have shown their solidarity with Ukraine by providing an immediate response,” the European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič said.
On June 25, the Ukrainian authorities requested assistance in the framework of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. As of July 6 assistance was provided from 4 European countries.
Sweden sent technical experts, flood barriers and water pumping hoses.
Pumping equipment, personal protective equipment, chainsaws, generators and tents for the affected population were delivered by plane from Italy.
Denmark sent rescue helmets equipped with lamps, as well as rescue cables and drones.
Slovakia provided tents, pumping equipment, generators, lighting equipment, chainsaws and wooden pallets.
The European Commission provides mapping services in the affected areas through the EU Copernicus satellite system.
The 24-hour EU Emergency Response Coordination Center constantly interacts with the Ukrainian authorities to carefully monitor the situation and send further EU assistance upon request.
