The European Commission intends to hold the gas negotiations in the trilateral format of the EU, Ukraine and Russia on the long-term transit of Russian gas to the EU immediately after the completion of the presidential elections in Ukraine.

Maroš Šefčovič, the Vice-President of the European Commission said that at a press conference in Brussels, UNIAN informs.

“When we met in January, we agreed that we should meet again in mid-May. So far, and I understand this, due to the election campaign in Ukraine, we still haven’t got the response [on the meeting]. But I can tell you for sure that we’ll do everything possible so that the trilateral meeting takes place before the summer, because then there will be little time left,” said
Šefčovič.

According to him, each party to the negotiations should remember that winter is already “behind the corner” and the gas supply situation needs to be solved not only for the next winter, but also to provide security for the long-term perspective.

It is noted that “for the European Union top priority is to provide security for the long-term transit contract across Ukraine for at least next 10 years.”

As The Journalist reported, Naftogaz undisclosed backup plan details in event of termination of Russian gas transit.
