Director of Ukraine’s GTS Operator Serhiy Makogon stated that European gas transmission system (GTS) operators have confirmed their readiness to arrange gas supply to the south of Odesa Oblast (Ukraine) via trans-Balkan gas pipeline in case gas supply through the Transnistrian region will be blocked.
Makogon summed up results of the GTS operators of Central and Southern Europe meeting in Brussels:
“The trans-Balkan gas pipeline should be able to transport 4.1 million cubic meters to the border with Ukraine per day (1.3 billion cubic meters per year). All gas transmission operators confirmed their readiness (to do this). This is very important for Ukraine and Moldova, as it will guarantee gas supply to the south of Odesa Oblast in case supply will be blocked through the Transnistrian region.”
To Makogon, in the future Ukraine will be able to receive Caspian gas along this route when such supplies will be economically sound.
“Slowly, but confidently, the regional market is becoming more open and competitive. Gazprom’s monopoly has been significantly reduced,” he said.
Makogon believes Europe has drawn conclusions regarding situation in 2009, when the Russian Gazprom stopped transit, therefore, European GTS operators are actively developing alternative routes for gas supplies.
As The Journalist reported, Ukraine’s gas reserves in storage facilities exceeded 20.3 billion cubic meters.
