In the US state of Maryland, for the first time in the world, a kidney was transplanted from one HIV-positive patient to another. According to the BBC, the operation was carried out at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
“For the first time in the world, a person with HIV was allowed to donate a kidney,” said Dr. Dorri Segev, noting that both patients feel good.
It used to be thought that HIV has a too high risk factor for kidney disease in the donor; however, new types of antiretroviral drugs used to treat the disease are considered safe for the kidneys.
Earlier, the “Journalist” reported that a former health worker was convicted in Germany and accused of killing 100 patients.
