EU: SBU should be deprived of the authority to fight economic crime

The Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Hugues Mingarelli during the discussion at the 5th meeting of the EU-Ukraine Civil Society Platform said that the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) should be deprived of the authority to fight economic crime.

«Security Service of Ukraine should concentrate only on three main types of activity: protection of state secrets, counterintelligence activities and counter-terrorism combat. The SBU should stop carrying out any other law enforcement tasks or functions, especially the fight against economic crime. SBU should not work in this direction», – Mingarelli stated.

At the same time, during the discussion Аlexander Vinnikov, Head of NATO Liaison Office in Ukraine, noted that the Security Service should become a demilitarized law enforcement agency, reported UNIAN.

«We would like to see SBU demilitarized and depoliticized, an effective internal security service», – Vinnikov said.

As «The Journalist» reported, Ukraine has more prosecutors than in any country in Europe, and this is a huge expense.
