Indonesian President Joko Widodo decided to move the capital of the country from the city of Jakarta, located on the densely populated island of Java.

This was announced by the Minister of National Development Planning of Indonesia Bambang Brojonegoro, Deutsche Welle reports.

“The president chose to relocate the capital city to outside of Java, an important decision,” the minister said after a government meeting.

It is noted that the authorities had yet to pick a new location. Referring to the experience of Brazil, Malaysia and Kazakhstan, the Minister noted that the transfer of the capital from Jakarta could take about 10 years.

Recall that Jakarta is the largest city in Indonesia with the population of more than 9.5 million people.

As The Journalist reported, the Indonesian island of Komodo will be closed for visitors.
