Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE), Thorbjørn Jagland, can take organization out of the budget crisis that has arisen due to Russia’s non-payment of annual contributions to the CoE budget by reducing its own salary.

This was stated by member of the parliamentary delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Iryna Herashchenko on her Facebook page.

Herashchenko argues that «Jagland is blackmailing the CE with secretariat cuts and other savings (due to the non-payment of Russian contributions), to which local officials are sensitive because they are accustomed to a luxury life».

«It is noteworthy that at Jagland himself the salary is much higher than that of President of France or UN Secretary General. And at the same time, the result of his tenure is a serious crisis of the organization, discredit of Council of Europe, lack of progress in the protection of human rights in the countries – members of Council of Europe. Perhaps General Secretary Jagland should start a new CE savings course on the example of his own office? Reduce their own salaries and salaries of their employees? This will be a good example of devotion to the principles, and not trade in them for the return of the contributions of the Russian Federation», Herashchenko emphasized.
