Researchers found that severe drought became the main «killer" of the Roman emperors. The results of the scientific work are published in Science direct.

As the study showed, scientists have established the influence of climate on the Roman Empire and neighboring states in its heyday. It turned out that the murders of the emperors, the famine in the army and the climate are interrelated. At that time, each year the drought increased the probability of killing the emperor by about 11%, and the probability of an uprising of one or several armies by 13%.

Lives of Roman legionaries directly depended on the amount of harvested crops. As a result of drought, they lost their basic income and resorted to insurrections. Emperors remained unprotected. Every fifth ruler of Rome died not from old age or arrows of enemies, but from poison or dagger of assassins, his legionaries or his own relatives.
