The Kyiv Patriarchate calls upon the episcopate, clergy and believers of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) to prepare for the Unification Council.
This is stated by the press center of the Kyiv Patriarchate regarding the decisions of the Holy Synod of the Mother Church of Constantinople and their significance for the church in Ukraine.
The statement says that the decisions adopted during the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate open the way for the convocation of an emergency Unification Council of Bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church as part of the entire Ukrainian episcopate, who appealed in April this year to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, with a request to provide Tomos for UOC autocephaly.
The Kyiv Patriarchate calls upon the hierarchs of the UAOC and the hierarchs of the Moscow Patriarchate in Ukraine, involved in the unity process of the Ukraine Patriarchate, to proceed with the preparation of an emergency Unification Council.
«The task of this council is to approve the decision on church unity, elect the Primate of the united local autocephalous UOC, who will get on its behalf the Patriarchal and Synodal tomos on the autocephaly of the UOC,» – the document says.
The Kyiv Patriarchate expects that, taking into account all the circumstances, such as history, successful activity, a large number of episcopates, clergy and church members, monasteries and theological schools, other factors, heads of the local Ukrainian Orthodox Church will be granted Patriarch status in keeping with the Patriarch and Synodal tomos.
