Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, while in Helsinki, said that the so-called “Steinmeier formula” is more favorable to Russia and not Ukraine itself.

“The Steinmeier formula is okay, but in my eyes it is more in favor of Russia than in favor of Ukraine,” Nausėda said at a joint press conference with Finnish President Sauli Niinistö.

According to DELFI, the Lithuanian president is convinced that the Ukrainian government is under big pressure to agree and make concessions with the Russian side.

“Someone puts big pressure on the Ukrainian government to reach some deal with the Russian side and to make concessions, but we do not see any concessions from the Russian side,” said Nausėda.

At the same time, the approaches of Lithuania and Finland presidents on the issue of dialogue with Russia diverged.

In particular, Nausėda said that dialogue is possible only if Russia changes its behavior, and Niinistö countered that communication is necessary to understand Moscow’s way of thinking.

“I am always a supporter of dialogue, but we must also have principles and values,” the President of Lithuania emphasized.

According to Nausėda, the international community should maintain pressure on Moscow to change its aggressive stance towards its neighbors.

To Niinistö, a dialogue means “that at least you are trying to get better informed about what the other one is thinking.”
