Today, October 15, officials in Macedonia should start a discussion on changing the name of the country. About this reports Radio Svoboda.
In the summer of this year, after signing an agreement between Greece and Macedonia, under the official name of the latter, Greece pledged to stop interfering with Macedonia’s accession to NATO, and in the future to the European Union. According to the agreement, Northern Macedonia, and not Macedonia, should become the official name of the country. In this way, the parties decided a foreign policy conflict.
Representatives of the Macedonian opposition spoke against the deal. We are talking about pro-Russian political forces. In order to adopt it, a thematic referendum was held in the country. However, the referendum did not take place due to the low turnout of the population.
«To amend the Constitution, 80 votes out of 120 are needed. The ruling coalition has only 69 deputies. The prime minister called on the opposition to support the agreement for the sake of the country’s entry into NATO. If there are not enough votes, early elections can be held in the country», the report says.
As previously reported by The Journalist in Macedonia, they launched the process of changing the name of the country.
