Since the beginning of the year, the third case of diphtheria has been registered in Ukraine, Ministry of Health of Ukraine has informed.
«In Ukraine, a third case of diphtheria was registered, a 15-year-old teenager fell ill in Kyiv region, the diagnosis was confirmed in laboratory. The child was injected with antidiphtheria serum, his condition is stable, he is now in the infectious disease department of the Kyiv oblast children’s hospital in Boyarka», the department notes.
At the same time, the Ministry of Health stressed that in the case of diphtheria it is necessary to introduce antitoxic antidiphtheria serum, which neutralizes the effect of diphtheria toxin.
«In Ukraine there is a sufficient number of vaccines and antidiphtheria sera. Ministry of Health of Ukraine recommends as soon as possible to do the necessary vaccinations against diphtheria for children and adults. A quality and safe vaccine is available in all regions of Ukraine, and is provided free of charge both for children and adults. At the same time, vaccination against diphtheria remains low – only half of Ukrainian children were protected by the third dose of APDT vaccine (adsorbed pertussis-diphtheria-tetanusvaccine, – Ed.) at the age of 18 months as for the last year, and less than half of adults», the website says of the Ministry of Health.
