Ukrainian MPs strengthened punishment for roundwood smuggling

On September 6, people’s deputies adopted a decision according to which the moratorium on the firewood export is canceled and safeguard measures to the log export aimed to preserve forests are introduced, reports Strana.ua news agency.

The Bill No.5495 «On the Preservation of Ukrainian Forests and the Prevention of Illegal Export of Unprocessed Timber», which includes Presidential amendments, that were adopted by the deputies, establishes increasing of responsibility for roundwood smuggling and limits the domestic consumption of raw timber to 25 million cubic meters per year.

«The border crossing of unprocessed timber outside the customs control or concealing from customs control entails a penalty of imprisonment of three to five years,» – the report said.

In addition, illegal logging that caused significant damage, transportation, storage and sale of illegally harvested wood entails a fine of 1-1.5 thousand tax-free minimum incomes or arrest up to six months, or restriction of freedom to three years, or deprivation freedom for the same period.
Similar actions on the territory of reserves or a nature reserve fund are punishable by a fine of 1.5-2 thousand non-taxable minimums or imprisonment for 3-5 years, the same actions that entailed grave consequences are punishable by imprisonment for 5-7 years with property confiscation.
As The Journalist reported earlier, Zaporizhia customs officials did not allow to export more than 500 kg of amber to the UK.
