The Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine, Yakiv Smolii, has signed and submitted to the President of Ukraine his letter of resignation, explaining his decision by systematic political pressure that has been exerted on the National Bank for a long time.

“This makes it impossible for me, as the Governor, to effectively fulfill the duties entrusted to me in managing the activities of the National Bank and interacting with other state bodies. With my resignation, I want to warn against further attempts to undermine the institutional foundations of the central bank in Ukraine,” Smolii said.

At the same time, according to the Deputy Parliamentary Committee on Finance, Tax and Customs Policy, Yaroslav Zheleznyak (Holos political party), the chairman of the board of Ukrgasbank Kyryll Shevchenko may become a candidate for the post of Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine.

According to Interfax-Ukraine, Zheleznyak admits the consideration of Shevchenko’s candidacy if Smolii’s resignation to be accepted.

Earlier, adviser to the Head of the Presidential Office for Banking Affairs Viktoria Strakhova said that the “market won’t be affected so much” by the statement on the resignation of the head of the National Bank Smolii due to political pressure and “will back to square one.”

“I am sure after Yakiv Smolii’s resignation to be accepted, a new Governor that will be approved by both the professional and the international community will come to replace him,” she said.
