On the night of October 2, two unknown men tried to hack into the information systems of the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine (KFI). This is reported by The Journalist, citing the KFI representative.
The investigative team and representatives of the Department of Cyberpolice of the National Police of Ukraine are working at the scene of crime. According to the preliminary version, it is assumed that the attackers were trying to obtain information about the results of findings related to resonant forensic examinations, which are carried out by KFI experts.
Nowadays Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise is the main center for conducting complex forensic examinations related to hostilities in Eastern Ukraine, armed aggression against Ukraine, crimes against the national security, Ukraine’s territorial integrity and support of separatist actions. The results of individual findings as well as the findings of judicial KFI experts are presented as evidence of aggression and war crimes for being considerated by the international courts and tribunals (the UN International Criminal Tribunal in Hague).
In addition, the results of the pretrial investigation on the death and injury of soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine during brigade tactical exercises at Rivne military range No. 233 on July 6, 2018, have received considerable resonance and informational interest. Recall that on September 27, the Director of the KFI Oleksandr Ruvin, together with the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Yuriy Lutsenko, took part in a meeting of the National Security and Defense Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, and reported on the investigation process of the Molot mortar explosions cases.
Penetration to the information system of the Institution is a violation of the Law of Ukraine «on Forensic Examination». In particular, the Article 4 of the Law of Ukraine «on Forensic Examination» states, that the independence and the correctness of forensic expert opinion are ensured by prohibition under the threat of the responsibility, provided by the law, to interfere in the conduct of a forensic examination.
