The Synod of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) deprived the honorary patriarch of the OCU Filaret of the administrative rights of the Kyiv Diocese and handed it over to Metropolitan Epiphanius.

This is stated in a press release on the outcomes of the UOC (OCU) Holy Synod session regarding the meeting of three bishops, a small number of convened clerics and laity, which was held on June 20 in the St. Volodymyr Cathedral in Kyiv.

It is noted that the synod, “taking into account his special service to the OCU in the past, it was decided to let the honorary patriarch Filaret remain in the OCU episcopate, but without any canonical rights and obligations related to the Kyiv diocese administration.”

According to the OCU Synod, the meeting organized and held personally by honorary patriarch Filaret on June 20 had no decision-making authority, in particular, regarding the decisions of the local council of the UOC-Kyiv Patriarchate (December 15, 2018), which, in accordance with the charter of the OCU-KP, had been signed by the council and immediately entered into force.

As The Journalist reported Patriarch Filaret calls on “cathedral” on June 20.
