The pedestrian and bicycle bridge (“Klitschko Bridge”) which connects the Khreschaty and Volodymyrska Hirka parks, must as soon as possible undergo the technical expertise to eliminate the existing problems. This was stated by the former head of the Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA), a people’s deputies candidate in constituencie #212 (Kyiv), Oleksandr Popov, KyivVlast (Kyiv Authority) reports.

To Popov, if the designated activities would not be carried out, the operation of the “Klitschko bridge” can lead to safety hazards for residents and guests of the capital.

“It was a big mistake of the Kyiv authorities to put into operation this complex and unsafe structure without a state act of acceptance. Obviously, Vitalii Klitschko did not deal with the construction before and, fortunately, he had no bad experience associated with such objects. But the question arose to his environment, who did not tell the mayor what to do and how to do; so, the bridge was opened, probably, for political reasons on the Day of Kyiv, without any awareness of its being unsafe for people,” Popov noted.

Meanwhile he noted that he would not have opened the bridge without an examination and an acceptance certificate, which proves that during state examination all bridge’s elements were checked, including those built during the hidden works, such as pile field, columns and their reinforcement, etc.

“In the case of any deficiencies identified by the state examination, the contractors should eliminate all of them. But today, all flaws of the bridge are evident, and that makes people nervous,” the former KCSA head stressed.

Popov stressed that, judging by the photos of the recent cracks, the works on strengthening the slope of the hill, which adjoins the bridge, have not been done properly. He also highlighted that the problems of landslides on the Kyiv hills slopes were always a “separate major task”, and required additional solutions.

“And here the problem can arise after the structure is ready […] if there are any landslides, the structures adjacent to the slopes will be exposed and start to collapse. Perhaps, it is necessary to strengthen the parts of the slopes vulnerable to landslides. But it requires expert evaluations,” Popov topped off.
