National Philharmonic of Ukraine on September 14 opens its regular concert season (more than 180 concerts are planned). Remaining traditional in the sense of the structure and directions of its activities, combining seasonal concerts with original art projects, being one of the centers of the festival-competitive life of the country, the Philharmonic this year somewhat changes the accents of the repertoire policy. We are talking about the integration of modern music in the context of philharmonic programs, where the dominant position is habitually occupied by the West European, or Russian classics. A special place in the mainstream of this trend belongs to the works of Ukrainian composers. About this reported the press service of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine.
Indicated course of the Philharmonic has been outlined in the last season, now this line will manifest itself even more expressively. Symbolic «arch» is created by the programs of concerts for the opening and closing of the season: in the first case, «company» to the classics, Max Bruch and Serhiy Rachmaninov, will be Yevhen Stankovych, and in the second – alongside the music of Josef Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven – one of our compatriot Olelksandr Shchetinskiy. You can also name the concert of the vocal ensemble Alter Ratio, whose program includes works by Svyatoslav Lunev, Maxim Kolomiets, Oleksandr Retinsky and Maxim Shalygin (November 3), a concert at the International Festival Kyiv Contemporary Music Days with the participation of conductor Michel Menabde, where the works of Hugo Hermann, Janis Ksenakis, Georg Friedrich Haas and Olga Neuwirth (11 December), the pianist Yevhen Gromov’s project «Cascades and Consonances: Balakauskas and Guba» (January 27), Victoria Fields (January 31), and others.
The highlight of season are conceptual monographic programs. Among them – «The Musical Gospel of JS Bach», harpsichordist project of Natalia Sikorska (October 3), «Ihor Stravinskiy», concert of the National Brass Band, Volodymyr Runchak (October 16), «Three Prometheus» concert of Philharmonic symphony orchestra under direction of Mykola Dyadyura, dedicated to Promethean theme in works of Beethoven, Scryabin and Stankovych, «Olivier Messiaen. Twenty views of Jesus as a baby», is author’s project of pianist Anthon Baryshevskiy (December 10), and the like. Among the guest performers are Capella Cracoviensis from Poland (September 27), Elysée Quartet from France (October 25), guitarist Voin Kosic from Serbia who will open the International Guitar Festival on December 7, Daniel Ren (violin) from Germany, who will perform as a soloist with the Kyiv Chamber Orchestra (January 17), Quartetto di Cremona from Italy (May 23), the famous cellist Hari Hoffman from the USA, who will give a concert together with the Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra led by Roman Kofman (May 24).
However, a real event will also be a performance in the Column Hall named after N. Lysenko world-famous Ukrainian bass, which, unfortunately, not so often performs on the domestic scene, Anatoliy Kocherga – will perform Fourteenth Symphony by Dmytro Shostakovych (December 14). Separate block of the philharmonic repertoire are jazz concerts. Among the most interesting are the Moonlight Serenade project with the participation of the jazz band of the US Air Force Orchestra (October 20), Symphojazz, National Ensemble of Soloists «Kyiv Camerata» with Ukrainian-French pianist Dmytro Naidich (June 2), general concert of pianist and composer from France Vincent Burzheks and Big Band Alexiy Vykulov (April 3).
In addition, the International Festival of Guitar Music, the festivals «Kiev Spring» and «French Spring in Ukraine», the festival of contemporary music «KyivMusicFest», as well as the International Competition for Young Pianists in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz and the Final Concert of the laureates of the International Instrumental Music Contest named after Yevhen Stankovych.
