The winter session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) starts in Strasbourg on Monday, January 27 and will last until January 31. This was reported on the PACE website.

The new Permanent Delegation of Ukraine to PACE, which missed the preliminary fall session after the parliamentary elections in July 2019 in protest against Russia’s unconditional return to the Assembly, will attend the session for the first time.

Today, parliamentarians will elect a new PACE president. The Belgian senator, representative of the political group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) Rick Dams seems to be the most obvious candidate. In addition, during the session, the Presidents of Georgia and Moldova will address the Assembly.

It is also planned to hold debates within the framework of the session, on violation by PACE member countries of their statutory obligations. Other issues include the functioning of democratic institutions in Poland, a report on political prisoners in Azerbaijan.
