The Verkhovna Rada appointed Maksym Onoprienko a member of Ukraine’s National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting.

This decision was backed by 233 deputies out of 343 registered in the session hall.

As noted by the head of the Parliamentary Committee on Freedom of Expression and Information Policy, Vice-Chairman of the Popular Front faction, Viktoria Siumar, the current parliament did not appoint members of the National Council according to its quota.

“Four members of the National Council were appointed by the parliament of the last convocation. Their powers will expire on July 4 of this year. But it is obvious that we will not have time to hold a competition and appoint new four members,” said the parliamentarian.

The day before, on May 30, the parliament appointed one member of the National Council to replace Kateryna Kotenko-Zahorii, who wrote a letter of resignation at her own request and was dismissed in 2016.

The Committee on Freedom of Expression and Information Policy announced a competition for this position and received 10 applications. After checking the documents, six candidates were found to meet the requirements.

“Currently, the work of the National Council on television and radio broadcasting is blocked after the cancellation of the decree on the appointment of Volodymyr Horkovenko. In fact, there can be no licensing of regional TV and radio companies for digital licenses. And we turned off the analog broadcasting. This is a serious problem today for regional broadcasters. Such a decision could allow the National Council to unblock the work,” Siumar stressed.
