The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has presented a project to prevent bringing sailors to crimes done at sea, protection of their rights for the just treatment during the criminal proceedings, in detention facilities and in the penitentiary institutions. This is reported by the Consulate Service Department on its official Facebook page.
It is noted that as of October 9, more than 290 Ukrainian sailors are held at penitentiary colonies in foreign countries. In particular, the ships with the Ukrainians on board were detained in the ports of Greece, Italy, France, Spain, Libya and Nigeria.
In general, Ukrainian sailors are most frequently detained for transporting illegal migrants, as well as smuggling explosives and tobacco products to third countries.
