Pompeo offers to “raise price” for Russia, China for support of Assad regime in Syria

U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo believes that the United States along with other “responsible countries” in the UN should increase the price for Russia and China, which use a permanent membership in the Security Council to block peace initiatives in Syria, Ukrinform reports.

Pompeo said that over the past few months, Russia and China have repeatedly abused their veto in the Security Council, supporting the strategy of the Assad regime, “which destroys its own people.”

“They [Russia and China – ed.] believe that they will avoid retribution for their actions on the Security Council. They believe that their partnership with the Assad regime will bring political and economic benefits that exceed any price of conscience or moral obligations,” the US Secretary of State said.

At the same time, Pompeo emphasized that “the duty, the responsibility of the countries of the world is to increase this price.”
