Poroshenko appoints new military commander in combat zone and orders to liberate Donbas

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, in the framework of planned rotation of commanding personnel, has appointed Lieutenant General Oleksandr Syrskiy as the new Commander of the Joint Forces Operation in Donbas.

The president said this during a meeting with the officers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the city of Chasiv Yar, Donetsk Oblast.

“I want to inform you that at the suggestion of the Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak and Chief of the General Staff, General of the Army Viktor Muzhenko, it was decided to rotate the commanding personnel of the Joint Forces; therefore I decided to support the proposal of the Ministry of Defense and appoint Oleksandr Syrskiy as new Commander of the Joint Forces,” Poroshenko said.

According to him, Sirsky successfully served in all commanding positions, from squad leader to deputy chief of the General Staff.

“He took an active part in the ATO, in harsh conditions of 2014-2015. At first, he was chief of Staff, later headed the Anti-Terrorist Operation, and in the most difficult moments he ensured effective actions to organize the defense and repel the offensive of the Russian troops,” the President added.

In addition, Poroshenko ordered the newly appointed JFO commander Sirsky to ensure the liberation of the Ukrainian land, the restoration of Ukraine’s sovereignty in occupied part of Donbas.

The head of state noted that the Armed Forces of Ukraine force and means, as well as other military formations and law enforcement agencies, located in the JFO area, are being subordinated to the new commander.

As The Journalist reported, Poroshenko said monetary support of servicemen will be UAH 10,400.
