President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that the highest priority for Ukrainians should be the preservation of democratic values, especially amid Russian propaganda, which continues to impose an opinion about “good life during Soviet era.”

According to the presidential press service, Poroshenko said this at the presentation of the documentary film “From slavery to freedom”, which was shown as part of the Kyiv Jewish Forum.

The head of state stressed that a number of significant events were held in Ukraine over the past 5 years, in particular, a joint commemoration of the victims of mass executions in Babi Yar.

“I want to congratulate director Arkady Kogan, who shot this brilliant film, and the whole creative team. I want to congratulate Natan Sharansky, who was born in Donetsk and is a good friend of Ukraine and Ukrainians. We remember and appreciate this,” said the President.

According to him, Sharansky became a symbol of the struggle for freedom in the USSR in the 1970s.

Poroshenko also stressed, that Ukrainians must strongly maintain unity and solidarity in order to protect the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state, despite Russia’s attempts to disunite Ukrainians.

As The Journalist reported, Poroshenko appointed a new head of the National Council on television and radio broadcasting.
