President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko was deprived of title of honorary citizen of Verona. In opinion of Ukrainian Ambassador to Italy, Yevhen Perelygyn, this decision of local deputies of city was directed by Kremlin. About this writes Italian edition of Corriere del Veneto.
Draft resolution on deprivation of Poroshenko’s title was registered in city council of Verona in December 2017 on initiative of leader of youth wing of League of North Party (now the party «League» – ed.), which is known for the pro-Russian direction.
September 20, 2018, city council of Verona has already deprived Poroshenko of this title.
«Analysis of text of document, as well as fact that it was signed by almost all representatives of League of North party that won Verona in local elections, attests to political direction of this decision … In text of document, phrases used by Russian propaganda often come across, in particular, about «civil war» (while the whole world is witnessing the military aggression of Russia against Ukraine), «violation of the rights of Russians in Ukraine» (while all the authoritative international organizations speak of the neglect of citizens freedom in the annexed Crimea and the Donbas).
Unfortunately, there are still some politicians who want to be Putin’s puppets, and I cannot prevent it, because for us the main thing is to strengthen inclusive relations between Ukraine and Italy, as well as to develop economic cooperation», the report said.
Recall that the city council of Verona awarded Petro Poroshenko the title of honorary citizen at the end of May 2016 as a token of gratitude for the return of 17 paintings stolen from the Verona museum of Castelvecchio.
The former mayor of Verona Flavio Tosi noted that merit of Petro Poroshenko is that paintings found in the Castelvecchio museum returned to Italy in 6 months, while in similar case with the Netherlands it took 6 years. According to Tosi, reason for depriving President of Ukraine of status of an honorary citizen of Verona is a purely political decision, since the chairman of League fraction in city council never mentioned return of paintings during his speech, but spoke only about Donbass, about confrontation with the United States and about supplies of American weapons to Ukraine.
