President Zelensky instructs Cabinet to control fatal car accidents’ investigation

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to control the investigation of mass fatal accidents in Odesa and Zhytomyr oblasts and take the necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such accidents.

Zelensky expresses sincere condolences to the relatives of the victims of the large-scale fatal accidents in Odesa and Zhytomyr oblasts, the President’s Office reports.

“The President instructed the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to control the accidents investigations, and also obliged the government to take the necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents,” the message said.

Zelensky pointed out to the Cabinet of Ministers the necessity to include the transport safety to the top priorities of its work.

At the same time, according to the police of the Zhytomyr Oblast, a suspect was announced to the driver of the truck, participant of the accident, resulted in 9 people died, 10 more injured.

A 55-year-old man is suspected of violating traffic safety rules, which led to the deaths of several people (part 3 of article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The driver was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Code of Criminal Procedure of Ukraine and is in custody in the special chamber of the hospital. The question of preventive measure for him is being decided. Investigators are requesting detention.

At the same time, the suspect refused to testify regarding the circumstances of the accident, referring to Article 63 of the Constitution of Ukraine.
