On the eve, on September 12, US President Donald Trump signed an executive decision providing for imposition of sanctions against foreign individuals and companies found to have attempted to interfere in American elections by «cyber attacks or otherwise».

Restrictive measures will also be introduced for the dissemination of propaganda and disinformation. Sanctions include freezing assets, restricting access to finance and other measures. The decision to impose sanctions within 45 days will be taken by the Prosecutor General and Ministry of Homeland Security, writes Deutsche Welle.

Advisor to the US President for National Security John Bolton said that document does not name specific countries, since «threats to elections come from several sources».
Sanctions resolution was signed a few weeks before the mid-term elections in the US, which will be held in November.
