Due to the delay in the completion of the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, the Russian Federation may need to increase volume of gas transit to Europe through Ukraine in excess of the contract. It is reported by Kommersant.

The peak selection rate for all contracts of a Russian company in the EU, Turkey and the Balkans is about 650 million cubic meters per day. According to estimates of the publication, in order to provide it, Gazprom may need about 32 million cubic meters of Ukraine’s GTS capacity per day (about 11.5 billion cubic meters per year).

However, as the practice shows, European customers are unlikely to need a peak selection level for Gazprom’s gas for a long period. If there is still a need for additional gas supplies to Europe, Gazprom may pump more gas into European storage facilities or simply not fulfill customers’ requests in full, paying fines.
