Russian FSB security operatives grossly violate international law regarding Ukrainian citizens who legally fish in the Sea of Azov, the Security Service of Ukraine reports.

The Russian intelligence service illegally detains Ukrainian citizens, and then through threats and blackmail, obtains false testimonies about the alleged illegal fish.

Thus, in 2018, two Ukrainians, who were sailing in a fishing vessel in the waters of the Sea of Azov, were detained near Berdiansk. They were forcibly taken to the city of Yeysk, Krasnodar Territory, where FSB operatives interrogated the illegally detained Ukrainians and demanded them to sign false testimonies about poaching the catch of aquatic living resources with prohibited fishing gear.

As Ukrainians refused to falsely accuse themselves, Russian security officers threatened them with imprisonment of up to 20 years, so the Ukrainians were forced to give false testimonies. A criminal case involving illegal fishing was launched against them.

“Ukrainians were in different places of imprisonment on the territory of the Russian Federation. After their release, they were fined and the boat was seized along with other personal property in favor of the aggressor country,” the SBU said.

As The Journalist reported, Ukraine’s maritime industry estimates losses from Azov Sea blockade by Russia at about UAH 10 bln.
