The newly elected President of Moldova Maia Sandu has said that as president she would continue to recognize Ukraine’s sovereignty over Crimea, just as she had done so far. Sandu advises Ukraine to take into account that the “soft direct dialogue” did not help Moldova in the negotiations on the settlement of the situation in Transnistria. It was reported by Evropeyskaya Pravda.
Sandu believes that Ukraine may need Moldova’s experience on the situation in the Transnistrian region, which has been out of Chisinau’s control since the 1990s.
“Moldova has chosen a soft approach: we recognized Transnistria as part of the negotiation format, we gave the local business the same trade regime that our producers have, in particular, the right of free export to the EU under the Association Agreement,” Sandu says.
She stressed that Moldova cannot come to a political solution to the conflict on its own, since Russia is part of the negotiation process.
