Scotland will hold a independence referendum from the UK until 2021, if the country leaves the European Union. This was reported by the first minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, Al Jazeera reports.

Sturgeon said that by the end of the year she would introduce a bill on defining rules of the new referendum as part of efforts aimed at avoiding the “the worst of the damage Brexit will do”.

Nearly 52% of Britons – more than 17 million people – voted for Brexit in referendum in June 2016. Most voters in Scotland said they were in favor stay part of the EU.

“The choice between Brexit and a future for Scotland as an independent, European nation should be offered during lifetime of this parliament’s cadence,” the report says.

Recall that a referendum for secession from the UK was held in Scotland in 2014 with 55% of Scots voted against.
