In the United States, sailor 95-years-old George Mendoza, who kissed a nurse in Times Square during a mass rally in honor of the end of World War II, died.
As reported by CBS News, Mendoza was hospitalized to hospital of Middletown, Rhode Island. It was reported by his daughter.
The famous photograph on August 14, 1945 was made by Alfred Eisenstadt. In the most famous frame of the last century, the sailor Mendoza kisses his future wife, Gretta Zimmer Friedman. On this day, Japan announced its surrender.
Already after Mendoza said that on that day he returned from a hike in the Pacific Ocean, and when he saw Gretta simply could not help it.
Gretta herself said that she had not seen him coming, so the kiss was a surprise to her. The lovers got into the camera lens of Eisenstadt, who took several shots in 10 seconds.
Note that the couple lived together for 70 years. Gretta passed away in 2016 at the age of 92. Mendoza did not live only two days before his 96th birthday.
