Nancy Pelosi, representing the Democratic Party of California, has been elected as speaker of the US House of Representatives (Lower House of Congress).

The decision was backed by a majority vote yesterday, January 3, the first day of the new composition of the American legislature, CNN reports.

Pelosi defeated Republican Party nominee Kevin McCarthy by receiving 220 votes. Now McCarthy will be the leader of the Republican minority in the House of Representatives.

Pelosi was the speaker from 2007 to 2011 as the first and so far the only woman in the history of the House of Representatives.

By being the leader of the democratic majority in the House of Representatives, one of the most acute problems for Ms Pelosi will be resistance to the policy of President Donald Trump on the construction of the border wall, which has already led to a confrontation between Democrats in Congress and the President and to a partial suspension of government work (the so-called ‘Shutdown’), which has been going on for the second week.

As The Journalist reported, Pompeo stated the U.S. starts withdrawing troops from Syria.
