The United States does not support the holding of a referendum on the Russian scenario in the occupied Donbas, said Kurt Volker, the special representative of the US State Department for Ukraine.
«As for the idea of a referendum, it was considered at the meeting in Helsinki. We, the White House and the State Department, issued a statement noting that we reject the idea of a referendum», Volker said.
American special representative also noted that this referendum «has no legal grounds under the Ukrainian Constitution and legal grounds in accordance with the Minsk agreements», reports Unian.
«We were quite clear at the time that holding a referendum was an unrealizable idea only on the part of Ukrainian territory where the majority of the population was displaced due to Russian intervention», Volker emphasized.
