The Russian Federation wants to preserve the existence of «people’s republics» in Donbas to cover its direct participation in the armed conflict in Ukraine, said Kurt Walker, special representative of the US State Department for Ukraine’s affairs.
The special representative of the United States said this in an interview with UNIAN.
Walker noted that Russia responded with criticism to the proposal to deploy a UN peacekeeping mission in Donbas.
«In truth, this is because they do not want. They want the conflict to continue. They want to preserve on the ground two so-called people’s republics as political entities that they can use as a shield to conceal Russia’s direct participation. And they want to wait, I think, to see what happens in the elections in Ukraine. So I think they just decided not to do anything at all at the moment», said the US Special Representative.
Walker also stressed that Russia is 100% commanding and controlling forces in Donbas.
«It finances contractual forces, exercises control over the political structures that are there, so-called people’s republics. So, this is a 100% Russian-led operation», said Walker.
As reported by The Journalist, Austria allocated € 1 million for demining for Donbass.
