The US Navy officially restored the Second Fleet in the Atlantic Ocean, the naval command of the Cold War, which was disbanded in 2011.
The revival of the Second Fleet is taking place against the backdrop of the increased activity of the Russian Navy’s submarines in the Atlantic, the Politico newspaper writes.
Ships, aviation and naval landing forces of the Second Fleet, which is based in Norfolk, Virginia, will be used for operations along the eastern coast of the United States, as well as in the northern Atlantic Ocean.
«Our control in the sea and the expansion of the military presence of Russia and China are two critical components of our national security,» – said Admiral Christopher Grady, commander of U.S. Fleet Forces Command.
